Free Response Questions

Description/Purpose

When creating free response questions, you'll find them under the "Other" category in Author, instead of in the drop down menu when creating an "Assessment". This means that, technically, free response questions are not assessments because user input is not evaluated, but functionally they are identical to assessments in that you can embed them in articles.

Fields in Author

  • Prompt (required): This is the question or instruction to which learners will respond.
  • Hint (optional): Some helpful text to point the user in the right direction as they craft their response.
  • Sample Response (optional): An example answer that the user can see after their answer has been submitted.
